Notes
Musicology is the 28th studio album by American musician and songwriter Prince.
Released in 2004 through NPG Records and Columbia Records. Initially distributed to concertgoers during his Musicology Tour (March–September 2004), the album was later released digitally and physically in Europe and the U.S. The album was Prince’s most successful in years, reaching #3 on the Billboard 200 and achieving Top 10 status in ten other countries.
Critically well received, Musicology won two Grammy Awards: Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for the title track and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for Call My Name. The album was certified double platinum by January 2005. Its success was partly due to an innovative sales strategy, as copies were included with concert tickets, leading Billboard and Nielsen SoundScan to change their chart rules.
Prince’s Musicology Tour grossed $87.4 million and was attended by 1.47 million fans, featuring both new tracks and classic hits like Purple Rain and Kiss. In 2019, a purple vinyl edition of the album was released.

I don't know if every copy is like this, but my copy of this European pressing, with "5171659000" printed at the bottom of the back cover and "COL 517165 9" printed as the catalog number on the spine, uses a digipak tray with a center hub that easily releases the disc when you try to remove it. To be clear, it securely holds the disc very well, but it doesn't have a "death grip" on the disc.
I bring this up because I have a U.S. pressing that uses a different tray, the kind some of you may be familiar with because it indeed has a "death grip" on the disc and can very well crack the hub in your attempt to pry out the CD. This is exactly what happened to my copy of the U.S. pressing, which is why I bought a second copy that turned out to be this European pressing. -

Edited one year ago2nd Album Revolution #1:
HERE WE GO!!!!
It took a while to get here, but we are here!!!! After all the years of fighting for his musical Rights (whether it was his Publishing or Contract wise), "Prince" is allowed to conduct business anyway he wants...
That was Music to his and our ears!!!!
With that being said though, no doubt "Prince" wanted to reconnect with the public, and by this time in his life, not only was he opened to do so, he was also very, very Vocal about it....In order to do that though, he realized that he had to put a few of his Musical Muses aside....So he had to find a way to be more acceptable without compromising his Musical strengths....
That's where "Musicology" came into play....
Yes, this album has been his most accepted album since 1992 (yes that long!!!!)..He even signed an album deal with "Columbia Records".....
He also had his tried and true "NPG" band: ("Rhonda Smith", "John Blackwell", "Renato Neto", "Candy Dulfer", "Maceo Parker", "Greg Boyer", and new comers "Kip Blackshire" (Keyboards) and "Chance Howard" (Keyboards, Bass)....
The Album starts with the outstanding "Bass" driven "Title Track"....I was coming from the store one day, I started my Car, and the "Title Track" came on, and this Kid in the Car next to me heard it, and started bobbing his head, HARD!!!!!!!
"Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance" is also a BUMPIN' track, with funny lyrics...
"A Million Days" is a TERRIFIC "Rock" driven track with "Soul" appeal....
"Life 'O' The Party" is a straight party...
The 1st Crown Jewel "Call My Name", is the best Slow Jam he has had in many years...
"Cinnamon Girl" (the 2nd single) is a very inviting tale of a young Girl dealing with serious Racism ...
"What Do U Want Me 2 Do?" is an "Electro Funk" dream....
"The Marrying Kind" and "If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life" should be a "Medley, it's PERFECT!!!!
"On The Couch" is a "Bluesy Slow Jam" with TERRIFIC Horns....
The 2nd Crown Jewel, "Dear Mr. Man" (also featuring "Sheila E."), is a come to reality check ....
The last song and Crown Jewel is, "Reflection"...It doesn't rhyme what so ever, but it didn't matter, it was the cap on a near perfect album...
This had people really wanting more from "Prince" in a very LONG TIME...That's alright though, because they were about to get it...Get ready for more in this 2nd Album Revolution!!!!! -
I compared the original 2004 promo pressing and the new official reissue.
First think you realise is that the promo pressing is much louder and has a sharper sound.
I will stick to my old company sleeve promo copy, it just sounds better on my equipment. -
I've got the Taiwanese release.
It's in general the French pressing, issued with the OBI.
Here it is coming with the 'Sony Music Asia' line on the label, but I think that CD is from Thailand, not Taiwan.
Any info on this ?

When I first heard the title song, I was like "This is great, Prince returning to his roots". Then, I heard the rest of the album and was severely disappointed. Nothing else on here lives up to the infectious title song.
-
Brilliant!! Sound wise everything works nicely, the CD copy I have is what was given out on his 2006 Tour which is pretty nice, this version trumps it easily.
-
Love the material and that it is marbled purple vinyl. Very dynamic and well mastered. My copy has several air bubbles on both discs though so you get that frequent background noise. Glad I bought it though.
