John Coltrane – Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane

Is this stereo or mono? Someone edited the release and now it states both, which surely can't be correct.

Anyone compare this to the recent OJC KPG cut? I imagine it's just as excellent. I don't see any mention of mono tracks here though? Unlike the other versions.

Classic jazz album. Pressing is clear and quiet. Overall a great alternative to an original or used copy.

Beautiful rich sound.
Vinyl is flat and quiet. BUT it has a lot of very light scarfs visible only on direct light. Fortunately not listenable at all.

Anyone compared this version with the “new” AP release?

This reissue is exceptional in every way except for the tape drop-outs on A3 & B2. I have an '82 OJC repress which, besides no drop-outs, doesn't even come close. Everything about this screams quality, I only wish any tape errors were noted as part of the release. I'd even be happy with a concurrent release series/variation with digital patches at tape errors, just as long it was transparent and open information.

More of a compilation than an album as it jumps between mono and stereo I think. Can feel a bit disted in that respect but fantastic playing all the same. The synergy is great between Coltrane and Monk, and you get to hear a different side to Coltrane I think. It’s almost like he’s really tuned into Monk, taking his lead. Also, the new OBI strip completely fails to mention that Coleman Hawkins plays on two of these tracks 🤩

This is a 180-gram OJC repress marketed by Acoustic Sounds, not an Analogue Productions release. A good lacquer cut by Kevin Gray, pressed on quiet vinyl. In the deadwax: KPG CA TM, and JLP-46A, JLP-46B. Dark orange Jazzland reproduced label.

Very nice pressing. Plays flawlessly, sounds very lively. I can't speak to the mastering work, but I know a good pressing when I hear it.

I've got a very good vinyl & digital system. I came to appreciate Blue Note later in life preferring the West Coast sound a little more. I really enjoy Kevin Gray's work & have most of the Classic & Tone Poet pressings and 9/10 have been perfect pressings. I'm enjoying this one also. Negative rantings are just loud noise.
