Amazing dynamics, recording quality, absolutely gorgeous sounding. Seven Island Suite watered my crops and cured my diseases

My second favourite Gordon Lightfoot LP after If You Could Read My Mind (aka Sit Down Young Stranger) which made me fall in love with his voice, Sundown is his tenth original album,it marked the pinnacle of Lightfoot's acoustic folk-country blend before he embarked on an increasing use of electric instruments, although he did include some electric guitar, notably on the title track.
Recorded in November of 1973 at Eastern Sound Studios,Toronto, and released January of 1974 on the Reprise Records label,It reached No. 1 in the US on the pop chart, the only Lightfoot album to achieve this. In his native Canada, it topped the RPM 100 for five consecutive weeks, first hitting No. 1 on June 22, 1974, the same day it reached the top on the south of the border.
The title track released as a single made it to No. 1 on the pop and adult contemporary charts as well as #13 on the country chart, while the other single "Carefree Highway" reached No. 10 on the pop chart, No. 1 on the AC chart and No. 81 on the country chart.

Yet another masterpiece from Gord, with incredible songwriting, performance & recording quality. This original Canuck-pressed beauty sounds terrific, having a spaciously fidelious & smooth presentation with unreal bass on whisper-quiet vinyl. Viva Gord!

If 'If you could read my mind' gave him his break in the USA as a star this album cemented his success. Hugely successful because of the title track and 'Carefree Highway' it's easy to overlook just how good some of these songs are and how accessible this album is. The production is very polished but the acoustic troubadour routes are still there. The MOFI half speed version really does trump other versions for sound but frankly the original pressing is pretty damn fine too.
