Edited 9 months agoI've Always Preferred The Mono Mixes Of The First Two Hendrix Albums, They Just Seem More Full, Powerful & Direct Than The Stereo Mixes Even If The Stereo Mixes Have More Thought And Ingenuity Put Into Them. This Pressing Of Axis Is Undeniably Phenomenal, I Have No Reason To Seek An Upgrade, It Sounds Perfect With So Much Detail And So Much Presence. The Music Absolutely Explodes Out Of The Speakers. Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic & One Rainy Wish On Here Alone Are Worth Picking This Copy Up For.

Edited one year agoThis sounds incredible! Blows the 2013 BG cut out of the water. Highly recommended.

Edited 5 years agoA real budget winner. If you can't find or afford the UHQR Mono of Axis, this is a worthy second choice. The UHQR is a better sounding pressing, but it cost a lot more. You get what you pay for. This 200g Mono is a good secondary choice. IF you have the coin and want the best, spring for the UHQR.

Edited 5 years agoThis is a great way to listen to Axis in Mono.
It is slightly low end leaning, making it necessary to crank just a little extra to get the full soundstage you want. That means its bringing the bass with it too, and its up there with the 2010 Sterling stereo for comparisons sake. Better than the UHQR anyhow.
It also has the high end surprisingly, with some guitar notes striking some real sharpness and volume where as the UHQR is slightly more tamed and less harsh for better or worse.
I should not compare too much as these are different mixes. It is fun to pick out some of them, but as the inner states its not all that different unless you know it inside and out.
Some of the mixing is strange on this one however. It sometimes changes from a very direct sound to a more reverb filled and spacious presentation. Maybe I never noticed it on the Stereos but I think its just a factor of the Mono mix.
Vocals are certainly present, and on some songs drums and guitars can be quite recessed. They do have the classy shimmer to them at least. On Little Wing it changes from direct to reverb filled as mentioned, but it brings out the drum attacks in the short solo age better than any other cut Ive heard, very satisfying.
It really makes you wonder what could be done if this was remixed completely.
If the King Crimson remixes are anything to go by some amazing things could be done.
For now this is a great way to hear the Mono, but not my main avenue as I really prefer the Stereo. The idea that Mono makes it a cleaner presentation I think is misleading what with some of the strange mixing choices.
Otherwise the 180 gram pressing is quiet and worthwhile in that regard as the tape hiss is much less present unlike with the UHQR. Although I cant promise the same for the 200 gram release.
Equipment Used:

System Fidelity SF-3050 Tower Speakers

This is a phenomenal record/pressing with a very nice glossy thick tip on sleeve. I can't imagine something better. I wonder if they used the same laquer for the 2013 QRP Legacy pressing, does anybody know?

Incredible, mind-blowing remaster and pressing of this album. I was expecting the UHQR to be better but it is not even close. This mono pressing sounds like you have the band in your room. Much more realistic instrument timbres, excellent instrumental separation and huge soundstage. I don't know how to for the vast difference between this one and the UHQR since Grundman remastered and cut both. Tape age perhaps? This one is not to be missed if you are into Hendrix.

Brilliant sounding version of the Mono Axis. Sounds better than the UHQR on my system. Buy with confidence!

4.43 at $60 seems crazy. Why is this ranking so low, please provide detailed review. I just bought the 2010 US Legacy version and it is smashing this one in ratings, hitting 4.64 and 4.67 for numbered version. WHAT`S UP HERÉ. 200 gram mono crap or is this just poorly rated by people who aren`t into his full breadth of work
