Edited 7 months agoPatrick Cowley also did some synthesizer overlays on songs, some released and some not- 2 of them were released on vinyl by Hot Tracks, on their compilation series called Hot Classics- L.T.D. - "Back In Love Again" (edited by Steve Algozino) and, Lipps, Inc. - "Funkytown" (edited by Bob Viteritti). Patrick did this back in the day to help improve songs for club play- In 1978 he added overlays for the 2 Sylvester songs which made them club hits- "Dance (Disco Heat)" and "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". He did this also with Michelle "Disco Dance", Paradise Express songs on their 1978 s/t debut LP, and Two Tons Of Fun "I Got The Feeling".
Patrick called his improved versions a "Mega Mix". Technically a megamix is considered a non-stop medley of an artists hits or a compilation of non-stop hits. But this was Patrick's signature, just as A Tom Moulton Mix is the Tom Moulton signature for his remixes. -
The Dark Entries deep dive into the Patrick Cowley archive have brought up absolute treasures and this latest collection is no exception. The two or three major highlights for me are the Spiked Punch/Spiked Punch Dub tracks, a squiggly analog mediation on Herbie Hancock's track 'Chameleon' which just worms into your mind, body and soul - curious precursors of the West Coast acid breakbeat tracks of the early-mid nineties (at least in my head).
The other standout track is the 1977 cover of 'I Feel Love', recorded a year or two before he did 'that' definitive remix for Donna Summer and already you can hear in this version the spatial cosmic analogue patterns that Patrick Cowley would bring to the remix.
Great to mix this version with his remix to create the most tripped out dancefloor journey imaginable. -
Dark Entries always have top quality vinyl but sadly the handling sometimes causes the plastic sleeves to fold ... and at the same time those wonderful inserts may cause damage if they're stapled ... as my copy's case ...

Edited 4 years agoA strange mini-album of Patrick Cowley's unreleaseds demos. Mastered, de-noised and transferred from original tapes, the quality is poor and lo-fi as i've expected.
Dark entries made a good job releasing in the past the back catalogue of Cowley's obscure recordings, but this time i think these covers of Donna Summer, The Temptations, Herbie Hancock & others they're fun and curious but absolutely unnecessary. Only for die-hard fans of Patrick. On the other side, the pressing is quite good, and the liner notes are very welcome. -
