Edited 6 years agoClassy American power metal featuring superlative singer Harry Conklin
Released in 2011, THE SCOURGE OF THE LIGHT is the ninth studio album from Colorado Springs-based Jag Panzer. Their style is Maiden-ish, but with greater expertise, superior production, a more diversified vocalist and some MF/KD elements without the eye-rolling goat-sucking drivel.
While I’ve heard Jag Panzer’s first distinguished album, AMPLE DESTRUCTION (1984), and songs from a few of their others, THE DEVIANT CHORD (2017) was my the first album I owned by the band and I was pleasantly surprised. Hence, I picked up their previous opus THE SCOURGE OF THE LIGHT. Jag Panzer aren’t hackneyed Euro-styled power metal, but rather refined American power metal with something sophisticated and unique to offer. While they throw-in a few stop/start stanzas they do it in a fresh way.
It’s next to useless to cite favorites because this is stunning classy power metal from beginning to end with superlative vocals by the inimitable Conklin. That said, he replicates Dio on “Let it Out.” Two standout cuts for me are "The Setting of the Sun" and anthem-ic "Union."
The ten tracks clock-in at almost 49 minutes.
