Flat, quiet vinyl. It had better be quiet, because some of this music is very quiet (for instance, the hushed opening of "Prelude to a Kiss"). Surfaces are not absolutely silent; my copy has a few ticks here and there, but nothing that disrupts enjoyment. Vivid, detailed sound. Clear separation of instruments. Bass detailed and clear, not muddy. Full, rich piano tone. Percussion really sizzles and pops! When I turn this up loud, I hear one of the best-sounding jazz records in my collection. Absolutely beautiful.
Musically, Joe is the star of this show. He is technically flawless and his playing is gorgeous. You would never guess Ellington was a very old man when this was recorded; he sounds great, and what pretty chords he plays! As usual with this great artist, he leaves plenty of space for the others to make their musical points, especially Ray Brown, who is in top form here. Just listen to the ending of "Prelude to a Kiss" and Brown will have your rapt attention. Bellson is discreet much of the time, but whenever he lets loose, it is a special thrill.
Beautifully clear phots of the four artists adorn the front cover. This is not a gatefold. The whole package looks great.
Great, great record. Music to enjoy for a lifetime. -
