Edited one year agoA widescreen (especially on headphones) -technicolor - musical style melting pot hot mess of an album. And all the better for it.

Being Adam and the Ant’s last studio album, it was released in 1981 under the CBs label. It managed to hit no. 2 in the UK charts but received mixed reviews from critics. Three singles were pre-released from this album, both ‘Prince Charming’ and ‘Stand and Deliver’ rose to no. 1 in the UK charts. ‘Ant Rap’ only achieved no. 3 after it had been remixed in 1982. Adam Ant would argue that this record is ‘very serious record based on classical, historical themes’. I believe that this record was a chance for Adam to indulge deeper into his obsession with sex and fetishes. Songs such as ‘Mile High Club’ and ‘S.E.X.’ can barely be tied into this category. The ants have moved into being pirates rather than native Indians, and this album is much more focused upon style rather than the sound. This comes along with the departure from their signature Burundi beats and onto a much more cinematic quality within their music. The Western sounding backdrops of ‘Five Guns West’ and ‘Mohawk’ give a very different sounding record than their previous work. The second track on the album ‘Picasso Visita el Planeta de los Simios’ happens to be an older Ant song yet is one of the best on this album. ‘Stand and Deliver’ is my personal favourite due to the history of the 18th century ‘Dandy highwaymen’. These two songs, along with ‘Ant Rap’ one of the first rap songs ever to be produced by a major band, are the only reason that this album has stood the test of time. Whilst being the worst album in the Ants’ heyday, it is filled with style and sound, but does not provide the songs as their previous work had.
