I’m going to respectfully but strongly disagree with doctorg. I loved the Yazoo albums but found the start of her solo career to mostly fit the description he has given Hoodoo, which I instead found to be Alison taking the reigns and giving it her all and doing what she wanted! I absolutely LOVE this album to this day and just picked up the vinyl repress which isn’t disappointing me thus far! Man I just rock out and sing along to this classic! Absolutely the best of her Sony years and one of my all time faves. Hoodoo, Hometime & the minutes are the first albums by her I’d recommend to anybody! Well, along with Live No Overdubs and the Yazoo albums!

Alf of the magical voice in a music industry cash grab. You can tell by the banality of the lyrics, the thematic inconsistency and the generic indeterminacy (strewth, we go from country to soul to rock...) that this is a studio obligation. The recording is good, the band are thoroughly competent, Moyet has an incredible voice, the cover is well designed, but this is not an album with an artistic vision - rather a collection of over-produced, bland, ionless b-grade songs. Ok, I like the song "Hoodoo", but it is one of the few memorable tracks. Much as it pains me to it it because I love this voice, this is hoodoo.
