Whilst I can understand the Santana "purists" not liking this album, I really think it shouldn't be overlooked. I purchased this on release in 1979 and regularly come back to it. It was my first exposure to Santana and started a love affair with them that lasted a good 10 years or so. Yes, Marathon is commercial, yes it has some cheesy moments and occasional corny lyrics, but in amongst all this is quite a hard edge all the way through. Take Lightning In The Sky for example, really quite heavy and a superb piece of music. All I Ever Wanted is probably the heaviest I've heard Santana, before and after, and is thrilling from start to end. This album ushered in the superb Alex Ligertwood, and his fantastic voice really breathes energy into the music. I like Greg Walker, don't get me wrong, but I felt the predecessor (Inner Secrets) was quite weak and underproduced and Walker's vocals get a bit "samey" for me. Ligertwood gave a harder vocal and his range is fantastic. Also observe David Margen's superb bass work, such an underrated bass player. Wrapped up in the late great Keith Olsen's brilliant production, you have a more consistent LP, much more so than the follow ups, Zebop and Shango.
So, in summary, you won't find a Europa or a Promise of A Fisherman here, but, taken in context, Marathon is well worthy of 40 minutes or so of anybody's time! -
