Edited 2 months agoWith its funky break-beats, infectious bassline and hip hop turntablism, the Propellerheads' debut release opened the floodgates for their distinctive brand of dancefloor-oriented big beat. Unlike the majority of big beat artists, the Props performed a lot of their own drums and bass, giving their music a more organic, vibrant and tighter sound than their sampling peers. One of their finest works, but it was strangely left off their album in favour of weaker tracks. (8)
"Lethal Cut" continued the template set by "Dive!" with its blistering uptempo break-beats and catchy riff. Uses the staccato sound of an Australian crossing walk signal as opening percussion (likely borrowed from Orbital's "Walk Now..."). But at over 7 minutes in length, it might have benefited from a cut of its own. (7)
"Go Faster" bridges the gap between trip hop and big beat, its downbeat, bittersweet string melody and classical piano chords juxtaposed with prominent break-beats (from Carleen & The Groovers' "Can We Rap") and stylish scratching. (7)
"Ron's Theory" showcases the quirky, downtempo brand of breaks that would characterise much of the Props' debut album. (6)
