Musically, The Civil Wars were quite a magical duo, too bad they couldn't keep it together. Another excellent album.
Surprised to read the pressing complaints from others. My copy is pristine and super quiet. I always do a wet/vacuum clean before hitting the turntable, so maybe that helped. I couldn't determine where mine was pressed, but it really is superb in quality. The cutting was done by CB (Chris Bellman), so no complaints on that aspect either. -
11/12
I’ve listened to this album many times but I figured it was time to actively listen to it from to back. Every song on this album is a banger. Both of their voices are incredible and they both exhibit a wide range from a lovely softness to intense and ionate singing. I love indie folk I and the slight alternative country style. There’s a consistency of driving bass drums and have a guitar that really elevates the power of the indie style.
Bangers:
“The One That Got Away”, “I Had Me a Girl”, and “Disarm”.
Every song on the album is excellent but the first two really hit harder. “Disarm” is a perfect cover that retains enough of the original mood, but also completely changes the song. It’s emotional, powerful, and aligns more with the folk country style of the band. I’ve listened to it hundreds of times and it’s one of my favorite songs.
ALBUM ARTWORK:
The artwork here is incredible. I love the grays, blacks, and whites and how the album is essentially a cloud tank of this jet black smoke enveloping a white cloudy backdrop. Maybe the black and white represent the duality of Williams and White, the difference between folk and country, man and woman, etc. Or maybe the encroaching blackness is symbolic of the sense of melancholy that appears throughout the album, dealing with themes of heartbreak, love, and depression.

This pressing is awful. Honestly not entirely sure how they are charging more than 5$ for this. It skips, it crackles, the vocals sound tinny. It’s a mess.
It’s too bad because this duo won’t be making more music together to give us something better. -
Great album, but one of the worst sounding pressings you'll ever hear. Barton Hollow is pretty bad too.
It's a shame that such a great band has such bleak offerings on vinyl. Both releases, regardless of what version you get, are jam packed with pops, warps and surface noise. Absolutely no care or attention given. What's even more sad is the sticker price for this is $39.99 - way too much money for such a terrible quality pressing. I'd go so far as to say this record is unlistenable, unless you don't mind nonstop surface noise that is very loud.
